For 2023 International Women's Day, the women of CBT and CannonDesign (CD) wanted to celebrate with our fellow women architects, designers and industry colleagues to visit and celebrate the spaces we have collectively shaped in Boston. We were eager to spotlight what we all know: women contribute to our built environment at all scales, from planning and landscapes to buildings and interiors to public art and installations. While planning the event, we quickly discovered that there are nearly no public resources for locating women-designed spaces. To assist in finding a tour route, we set up a shared map to plot possible locations and asked our networks to share their favorites. The power and potential of this crowd-sourced map quickly became apparent: by using our collective networks and professional organization connections, we could build the missing map ourselves.

On the March 8 walking tour loosely following the Boston Greenway, we visited ten favorites together and shared the stories of the women designers responsible for them. CBT and CD then introduced the crowd-sourced initiative to map our favorite women-designed spaces in the city and share our stories about them. The ambition is we can grow the map throughout the Women’s History Month with as many contributions as possible. This push has continued throughout 2023 to grow the map into the resource you see here today.
